Limburg is a province in the East of Flanders, bordering Dutch Limburg. The flag is the same as the old flag, with the addition af an escutcheon.
The heraldic description (blazon) of the flag is:
Argent a lion rampant gules armed and langued or crowned or escutcheon per fess ten pieces or and gules
Proportion of the flag is 2:3.
The lion is the lion of the county of Limburg, and in escutcheon are the arms of the old county of Loon.
The flag was adopted by the provincial council on 8 May1996 and approved by the Flemish government on 29 October1996.

The coat of arms of Limburg, adopted in 1996, fetaures the two mascottes of Hasselt, the provincial capital city, and Tongeren. Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium, formerly known as Atuatica Tungrorum, the home town of Ambiorix, the Eburon king who challenged and fought Julius Caesar.
Rik Beijnsberger, 12 December 1998
The colours were taken from the arms. These colours were not fixed. Various sources give different designs, but two main sets can be compiled.
Former flag
I have some xerox copies of sheets which seem to come from a book
(bilingual Dutch and French) containing regulations (for the Navy
maybe?). It contains a sheet with the honorary flags of the governors
of the provinces, adopted by Order in Council of 28 October 1936.
It includes a construction sheet. The flags are 150 x 150 cm. Each
stripe is 50 cm. The shields are 43.5 cm wide and 50 cm. high
excluding 3.75 cm for the point of the shield. The shields are in the
center of the black stripe.
