Title: Le plumet
(in English: The plume) Medium: plate collection Main author(s): Albert Rigondaud,
“Rigo”, peintre de l’Armée Secondary author(s): P. Charrié Edition (publisher: place): (author): Paris (France) Language:French Edition date: 1960-1985 Format: 289×210 mm Missing info! (1) Remarks: Series of loose colour plates with uniforms and regimental colours (flags are the series D); I own only some of them, e.g. D3 and D7 with Bavarian colours around 1800.
I understand that the plates were self-edited by Rigondaud, who
signed his paintings RIGO. Rigondaud was (is?) apparently an official
Army painter. Those painters are officially appointed by the Ministery
of Defense. The same system exists for Navy (Peintre de la Marine). Navy
painters are allowed to add an anchor beside their signature. The
tradition is probably very ancient. The famous military painter of Louis
XIV time Parrocel was nicknamed "Parrocel des Batailles" (Parrocel of
Battles), and there is still in the palace of Versailles a huge gallery
dedicated to battle paintings ("Galerie des Batailles").
Incidentally, this means that Rigondaud’s book might be a very
reliable source. Not everybody can be appointed Peintre de
l’Armée. The mention of Charrié, the French specialist
of war flags, as secondary author is another proof of the accuracy of
the plates. Ivan Sache, 19 Jan 2002
